Uni Games

The Australian University Games are held each year in late September/early October at different venues around Australia. Qualifiying games for Touch are held between Flinders University, the University of South Australia and the University of Adelaide, with unsuccessful teams having the opportunity of gaining entrance by competing at the Southern University Games which are usually held somewhere in Victoria.

AUTC WIN GOLD ON AND OFF THE FIELD AT SUG’s 2004

The AUTC juggernaut descended upon Geelong on Monday the 5th of July. Jezza and Sima getting the accreditation just before the accreditation centre shut meaning all players were fine to play the 9am timeslot the next morning.

Monday night saw the first official Kangaroo Court – the t-shirts were handed out (special thanks o Marty Green for the design and Kat for the slogan) with the appropriate slogan of ‘Touch Me’ on the front followed by ‘who am I kidding… Just f%$k me’ on the back.

The Court saw Adrian Sim handed the tour dunce award which went to the person who made the biggest screw up on the day, Adrian’s effort involved misdirecting five of our teammates and almost causing them not to make it (bearing in mind we only had 9 players!)[These 5 players had all driven from adelaide in ONE carolla seca loaded to the brim with luggage and players!] After Court the team ate at its regular haunt, the Mexican Grafitti where it received a substantial discount courtesy of e-banc dollars. The majority of the team then headed to Eureka for the night where everyone ended up smashed, a good way to finish a long day!

Day 2 saw the team involved in its first matches, a first-up challenge against Deakin (last years winners and this years favourite) saw AUTC go down 4-5, although some dodgy reffing could be held up to blame, for example when you get caught from half, it’s a rollball not a penalty tap, and if the opposition are offside you generally get a penalty not a touch being counted!

A long break saw the team devise some post-try celebrations for the second game – and they were used to good effect as AUTC thumped the Uni of Ballarat 12-3! Tuesdays Court session again saw Adrian handed the tour dunce award, this time for getting lost on his way back to the hotel the previous night (It took him an hour and a half to complete a fifteen minute walk!) The team then headed of to Mexican Grafitti where they entertained the Uni SA mixed side.

The controversy quickly followed after tea with the majority of the team piking and heading back to the hotel for a ‘quiet night’, you can feel the heart strings pulling. This did not deter Kat, Jezza or Sima who stayed true to the University Games spirit and went out and got schmammered!

Wednesday morning saw another early game at 9am, however Sima, Jezza and Kat refused to play until the rest of the team made up for their softness from the previous night. The 6 softies were made to perform the infamous ‘public dog’ for a minute before the start of the game! Special mention must go to Dutchy and DM (Michael) for their ‘humping of the leg’ routines!

The AUTC, once more a unified team went on to record an 8-3 victory against VUT! This had them finish second in their pool and play the third placed team from the other pool in a match to determine who made the semi-final.

The quarter final saw AUTC up against UM (Melbourne Uni), Simas old team. And with the amount of time that Adrian had spent with his old ‘friends’ from UM we were not sure whether Adrian was going to rock up in an Adelaide Uni shirt or a UM shirt. He ended up playing for us! And AUTC got out to a quick 2-0 touchdown lead with Kat getting her first touchdown to open the scoring before a J-Dog dive in the mud gave AUTC their second. Up by two at halftime, moment of the tour occurred just after half time when after Jezza broke through from half and got over the tryline, a quick pass to Cere whilst yelling down down down (as in score the touchdown) should have resulted in killing of the game, however, Cere held the ball for approx. 3 seconds before looking up and saying ‘down?’ When the yes answer was yelled out, just as she went to put the ball down, Cere got touched! UM then came back to level the scores before a classic AUTC move saw Cody touchdown to give AUTC the lead. UM must have thought Sima did have on his old shirt as they threw him an intercept pass and Sima went length of the field to score the final touchdown giving AUTC a two touchdown win!

Epic. That was the word used to describe the AUTC semi-final against La Trobe. With a scoreline of 13-12, other phrases such as ‘Where was the defence?’, ‘Can you guys defend?’ were also heard around the traps. Jezza’s view is why bother defending and then having to ruck the length of the field when you can let in the touchdown, get the ball back at half way and then get a whole set of six to attack the line!

The start of the game saw three touchdowns in a row before there was a forced change of possession!! In a game that ebbed and flowed, AUTC scored right on half time to level the scores at 7-all! Straight after half-time, Jezza scored his length of the field intercept to put AUTC up by 1. After that AUTC got up by 2 but just couldn’t put the game away and they were made to pay when La Trobe got up by 1 touchdown with minimal time to play, AUTC got a quick touchdown just before the siren went. This levelled the game at 12-all and forced us into a drop-off situation.

AUTC had the ball first but the expected touchdown did not come as J-Dog dropped a sitter from Sima to give La Trobe the chance to win the game. However a forward pass gave AUTC the ball back, and a big run by the Sim Dog who switched in Dutchy who popped a neat little pass to J-Dawg who dove in to score the winning touchdown. Game oft eh tournie this was, and it wasn’t suprising to see the team really party hard that night!!

Another trip to Mexican Grafitti with the ebanc dollars was on the cards and boy was everyone happy about it. The team then went to Eureka with everyone coming out! Special mention goes to Holly who vommed before she came out but backed up to party on! Where was the effort on Tuesday party pooopers???!!!

The tour dunce award went to Sima again Wednesday night, this time he received the award for ‘traditions sake’! It was also revealed that in six years of Uni Games, Sima had not received the award once, therefore the team only thought it fair that he should receive the tour dunce award a few times to help him grasp the importance of it.

It was a big night Wednesday and it was tough getting up on Thursday, but the AUTC tour party thought of all those cold Wednesday nights they had gone out and trained, they thought of all the sacrifices people at the club had made like…. Oh well im sure they will let you know the sacrifices they made themselves! So the moral of the story is we got up in the morning and went out to the fields to cheer on UniSA despite our hangovers. The build up to the gold medal game was a nervy one, UniSA were never really in the match against La Trobe for third place – was this an omen?? Ceri and Holly did their usual thorough warm-up of a run to the hockey goals and back, J-Dog led the SUG way with his warm-up consisting of taking of his jacket!

The players took the field in the Grand Final and it was a solid first half with AUTC taking a 2-touchdown lead into the half time break. Simas inspired half time speech helped guide the team to an 8-7 victory over Deakin, although if the game had gone for any more time, there would have been nothing left in the tank.

The team then went back to the sea-mist apartments before heading out to collect their gold medals. The team then invaded KFC for their final night dinner

Back at the hotel a secret mutiny was being hatched against the sheriff. This resulted in Kat being anointed with the sheriffdom for the final meeting…, this was a short lived experience with the J-Dog taking control of the group for the final night. The final night saw the uinsighted Mel make her first appearance, and with team shots going down a treat, courtesy of UniSA :), it was an awesome night!

AUTC are already taking expressions of interests for next years tour, where we will not only be looking to defend the gold medal won, but also defending the title of the University of FUN after partying harder than UniSA or Flinders Uni!

GO AU!

Australian Uni Games 2006

The 2006 Australian Uni Games held in Adelaide between the 24th and 29th of September. AUTC was represented in the mixed competition.

The team finished the week, placed 6th, both a very good result, and a little dissapointing at the same time. Uni Games is a lot of fun, 2006 was no exception.

Emails were sent to the anounce list during the course of the week detailing the games, and the socialising. Read on, they are contained below:

The team cosisted of:

Jeffrey Dutschke
Rob Leedham
Ben O'Donnell
Nigel Rogasch
Felix Barbalet
Steven Dutschke
Brad Newmann
Brittny Roberts
Tahlia Christie
Sophie White
Caroline Gunn
Shelly Laslett
Rachel Ericksen
Jacqui Smith

Rachel and Jacqui both played their first ever game on the monday morning.

These are the emails that were sent to the AUTC announce list over the course of the week, I hope you enjoy them...

Tuesday morning
Hey AUTC,

Here is a quick snapshot of day 1 and nights 1 and 2.

We smashed Flinders uni: 11-2

We beat Victoria uni: 6-3

And suffered a fate worse than death against Charles sturt uni: many tries-2

We have had one team member, let us call her girl, quietly remove herself from the field, walk to the nearest tree and stay curled over for a period of time. I expect it will happen many times today.

Our Mascot has been stolen. If any of you know the whereabouts of a "Touch me Elmo" please get in contact. Last seeen at the Woolshed picking up some University of Western Australia girls at 3 am this morning.

Enjoy working, the sun is very good....

Dutchy

Wednesday morning
Hey AUTC,

Yesterday we won one, lost one and drew the other. We are still on target for a top half, perhaps even 4th placing.

Dutchy fractured his jaw...Jackie has a large bump on his head. Newtons 3rd law has dramatic consequences in the game of touch football. Jeff is not playing any more. bugger.

Today we are playing at 10am and 1pm. The first game we need to win, the second game we need to try and lose by less than 20 touch downs.

Last night races were held around hindmarsh square, one of the girls hooked up with a NSW bloke, Ben o'Donnel was found dancing, and generally all were still going strong well into the 3rd hour of the morning...

Thrusday we play at 11 and 2. Support at city touch is welcomed and appreciated.

Enjoy work suckers

Dutchy.

Wednesday afternoon
Good Afternoon,

After a hard days playing, the results of today are this.

10am we showed the Uni of Ballarat how to play touch football. 6-2. The girl who picked up last night had the entire Uni of NSW mens hockey team come out and watch her and us play. After the game the entire UNSW team then got on one knee and serenaded her with a small song of endearment. Much Joy and Love. Girl was only slightly embarrassed...

2pm, ACPE demonstrated how 12 brilliant individuals can take the fun out of touch football by beating us 9 - 2. ACPE is a classy touch team that would beat most stateleague sides, so I was really impressed with the way we defended our scoreline and continually gave ourselves the opportunity to score. It is worth noting however, that in the cartwheeling championships that followed the game, AUTC gave ACPE a bath, yay for a little bit of dignity :).

Tomorrow we have a huge game against Melbourne Uni at 11am. If we win, we will finish in the top 4 at the championships. If we draw or lose, we will finish between 5th and 7th. Regardless of the result our "semifinal" is at 2pm

The team is playing really well as a team, we are a serious contender for the top 4 spot.

Go AU.

Come and see us at the Casino tonight.

Dutch-man

Thursday evening
Hey hey,

Wednesday night saw most of the team spend the evening at the Casino listening to the regular house band "Lucky Seven" that included team member Nigel Rogasch.
The girl pushed on past the casino to the woolshed and happened to meet up with the same Uni of NSW guy. Yay for her, it seems that the chicks are showing the guys how "socialising" needs to be done. Good on em.

Day 4 has come and gone. It was a little disappointing.

We started off against Uni of Melbourne. The winner guaranteed a top 4 finish, the loser having to battle it out in order to finish 5th. After Uni Melbourne scored 4 touch downs in the first 10 minutes, Dutchy decided that a fractured cheekbone was no reason to not cross the white line and scored with his first touch of the ball. Unfortunately a 4-0 lead to Melbourne was enough and they ended up winning 9-7. So it was off to the minor placing finals for us.

A game against Deakin Uni saw the following touch down celebrations...
1. the entire team cartwheeling toward the centre of the field
2. A team photo was taken with the ball as the camera
3. Caroline sat on the team toilet and whiped her arse with the ball
4. A touch "bowling ball" was bowled. Ten pins were bowled down.
5. A touch ball grenade was thrown, killing all team members
6. A congo line was establised and danced back to the centre line. Ball in tow
7. We all claped one of their touch downs, in grandstand formation
8. The Ball replaced the head of ben o'donnell. Steven D then proceeded to cut it off in a Samurai style. Ben died for the first time since the grendade incident
9. We walked back to the centre after a non-celebration of a nothing kind of try scored by someone 10. Ben o'donnel got "snaped." we are now drinking the carton of beer he got as a reward for being "snapped." Ben has now been aproached by Shane warne to get his tips on how to get involved in match fixing without being caught.
11. Rachel Erikson, celebrated the removal of her touch virginity with much dancing on the spot.

As you can probably tell, it was a fun game to play.

Tonight, the girl goes and finds the Uni NSW team AGAIN!!!!! The rest of us have camera phones...

Tomorrow, we play for 5th spot against some uni. Get out at 10am to watch us if you are keen.

Stay cool AUTC

For AUTC Uni Games news, this is Jeffery Dutschke in Adelaide, signing off.

Saturaday Evening
So the Uni Games story ends like this…

Thursday night saw the team celebrate with tea and drinks in norwood. Then to the bus stop, alas the bus had already departed so a taxi to the city. Much fun and games and drinks were had at the Woolshed and then the Rocket bar. Yes, girl did depart the Rocket bar to see UNSW boy again at the Woolshed. For nearly all of the team, the preparation for the 10am game was a 3am or later bedtime.

The decider for 5th and 6th started out well. The last time we met this team we scored to force a draw in the dying seconds of the game. At half time we were 2 -2 and looking good and awake (just). A couple of touch-downs later we were 4-2 down and were never quite able to get over the scoring line again. And we finished the tournament in 6th position.

After the game the team was very happy with the way the week went. The coach was super happy with the way the team played, particularly the way the new girls took to the game and did not let a try get scored on their outside. The social coordinator was well pleased with the efforts of the team after dark, particularly the style of girl.

After a team vote the awards went like this:

Best Player on field: Rob
Tourist in her own Town: Tahlia
Best first year male: Steven
Best first year female: Brittny

Surprisingly, after his injury, Dutchy was awarded Green and Gold selection.

Friday afternoon and night saw the team act like logs that are carved to take the form of sleeping babies…

Now we are all back at the sandstone institution on North Terrace we call uni, franticly trying to finish of the assignments that are due on the first day back.

Bring on the Gold Coast next year.

Melbourne 2008

Two day's in and University Games is in full swing.

The touch has been interesting to say the least, with some various issues over refeeres and the failure of the council to mark some fields...but on to matters we can control.

Division one on day one lost to Melbourne Uni, had a very easy 15 -0 win over Southern Cross, and finished the day with another win over Australian Catholic University. Day two began with a loss to Macqurie Uni and the side has some big games ahead if they are to reach top four.

The bright side of the refeering debacle is that it has given us the oppotunity for our team to ajudcate some top quality touch, inculding division one men's competiition including many NTL players. A good experience for our refs coming up to Waite comp in summer.

Div 2 had a fun first day with an inital victory sandwiched between two losses. The highlight being some AFL moves being used over touch moves to ensure the team scored a touchdown in the final game.

Off the field has been just as frenitic, with certain young ladies being very popular. Some fun has been had within the team as well but to this stage the culprits will remain nameless until we return home.

Weathers nice, accomodation has a nice bar, so enjoy your work while we enjoy the sunshine and the beer.

Uni Games - Gold Coast 2009

So I figure I should write something up in the way of a UGs report. I have left much of the social highlights out, mostly because (quoting a team member) I am "a worse piker than Jeff", but also because there are simply too many.

Last week, AUTC once again sent a mixed team to compete in the annual Australian University Games, held on the Gold Coast. Touch, and in particular mixed touch, proved to be a popular sport, with 12 division one & 18 division two teams (a total of 30 universities in mixed alone) fighting it out to score points for their respective universities. The AU team (members listed below), competing once again in division one, was in for a tough week, especially given the loss of many of the better players of the 2008 campaign.

Team members:
Adelaide Png
Alex Cassegrain
Ashley Johnson
Ben O'Donnell
Brittny Roberts
Catriona Murphy
James Haddy
Justin Saegenschnitter
Lara Scrimgeour
Mel Johnson
Steven Dutschke
Emily Moore (team physio)

The 12 teams were split into two pools for the majority of the week, and would then be split into a top 8 & a bottom four for the final games. Knowing that the bottom four teams would likely be relegated to the dregs of div 2 in 2010, the team was fairly keen to finish in the top 4 in our pool.
Monday morning lulled the team into a false sense of security. Faced with Southern Cross University (SCU) first up, the team was able to score almost at will, and without any substantial phaseplay. Hat-tricks to Alex and Ash saw AU run out 10-1 winners against one of the few easy-beats in div 1.
A few hours later, we came up against long time rivals Griffith University (GU), who we have just got over the line against in the previous years. Unfortunately, following on from the SCU game, a lack of team play saw AU play a dismal first half, and only GU's many turnovers gave us a half time lead of 1-0. Unfortunately, GU wasn't going to be dropping balls all game, and run over AU in the 2nd half to eventually win 4-2.
Tuesday was always going to be a tough day, with AU facing off against eventual top four teams Melbourne (MELB) & Wollongong (UOW). Hopes of pulling off an unlikely upset were dashed when Alex, the team's leading scorer after Monday, pulled up sore and was unable to play (he later found out he had broken a toe and missed the rest of the week, except for a cameo in the last game). MELB, one of the competition favourites, showed no mercy, and relentlessly targeted the three remaining middles of Ash, Ben & Steve in their attacking sets. A brilliant bit of team play from Steve & Justin, resulting in a Justin dive & score was a brief highlight in an otherwise forgettable routing, with AU going down 11-1, a loss which was further darkened with Adelaide injuring her ankle late in the game.

The afternoon game against UOW provided the team with some respite. Having already sured up a top 2 spot in the pool, UOW was keen for a nice & easy game ahead of their clash with MELB the next day, and given our injury woes, the team was quite happy to compete in what was probably the slowest game of touch ever played, with neither side willing to exert too much energy in the heat. In the end UOW literally walked away 4-1 winners.
Wednesday morning saw AU up against Notre Dame (UNDA), needing a win to guarantee a top 8 finish. Having quickly established a winning lead, both teams decided to pull out the trick plays, including "quarterback" - which resulted in being penalised for a 30m forward pass (& Ben being force-subbed after "arguing" with the ref), and a punt move, which oddly resulted in Adelaide (both the player & the team) being awarded a touchdown. Further shenanigans saw AU going down to one defender, and UNDA players doing push-ups after making a touch. AU eventually won the game 9-3 in a fun game (with the fun continuing with a joint AU/UNDA bbq & kangaroo court that night), and was rewarded with a top 8 finish, and a match up against competition favourites QUT that afternoon.

The game against Queensland Tech (QUT) was a whitewash. QUT, having gone through their pool games undefeated, severely punished the undermanned & overly-sore AU, demonstrating the ability to score on will that would eventually see them win the tournament. A touchdown to Mel Johnson was one of the brief highlights for AU, who fought hard but were smashed 11-1 by a much stronger team.

The Thursday offered slight relief, in that there was only one game to be played, versus Macquarie (MQU). Some solid defense & brief moments of brilliance in attack showed that AU wasn't far off the mark, but eventually MQU skipped ahead and won 5-3, in a game that was overshadowed by asickening knee injury to a MQU girl as she attempted a step.

The final game on Friday, against the Australian Catholic Uni (ACU) was the 7th/8th playoff. Adelaide played strong and scored some good touchdowns, however in the end some poor defense & panicking in attack saw the team go down 6-4, & finish the week in 8th spot. Sadly, everybody had scored at least one touchdown by Wednesday, so no AU players were present in the friday afternoon nudie-runs.

The best players (male & female) for the week (as voted by the team) were Ben & Lara, with Lara in particular having a great tournament in her second year, and receiving a few green & gold votes throughout the week.

The best first year player was given to Mel Johnson, who had an outstanding debut tournament, and is sure to be a key player of future UG campaigns.

The most improved award went to Justin, who had an absolutely fantastic week on (& off) the field. Under an injury cloud coming into the tournament, Justin had an absolute cracker of a week, scoring some great touchdowns, getting involved in the rucking, and even defending a fair bit in the middle following the injury to Alex. Justin also picked up the team mascot, Excitable Caitlin, as the social award, for his efforts off the field.

The MVP (Most Valuable Person) of the tournament went to the the team physio, Emily, who had a very busy week, & kept almost half the team strapped together towards the end of the week.

Although not as high as previous years results (6th in 2008, 5th in 2007), given the team available & the losses of key players from last year, AU performed well, and should have done enough to avoid relegation and, given that we weren't far off the mark against MQU, GU & ACU, we should be able to compete strongly next year (PERTH 2010) in division one.
