About AUTC

Touch (Football or Rugby) is a minimal contact sport ideally suited for getting exercise and social interaction into a hectic time schedule. The Adelaide University Touch Club is the largest Touch (or Touch Football) club in South Australia, catering for Adelaide University students and non-students at all levels of experience and ability from complete beginners to players who compete at the National Touch League. If you are interested in joining the club, or have a few questions, please email secretary(at)autouch.org.au. During Summer, trainings are usually held less frequently. We welcome interested persons to join the club - it is probable that we can find a suitable team for you to join.

Parking is available a short walk away from either of the training areas we use in Summer or Winter. Depending on numbers, training will usually comprise of some form of squad training (beginner, intermediate, advanced), some game sense activity, small or regular sized games and skill/agility drills. All club members and potential members are welcome to come out to training. During the Winter season we welcome all current and potential members to come out to training at 10:30 am every Sunday Morning at Park 10, which is situated north of the North Tce campus, over the University footbridge. A map can be found here.

The Adelaide University Touch Club is the largest Touch (or Touch Football) club in South Australia, catering for Adelaide University students and non-students at all levels of experience and ability from complete beginners to players who compete at the National Touch League. Our players come from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds and due to the minimal contact nature of Touch also have a relatively wide age profile.

The club enters teams in both Summer and Winter City Touch Men's and Women's competitions, as well as the City Touch Winter Thursday Mixed competition. During the Summer season, our club runs it's own Mixed competition consisting of our own and external teams at the Waite Sports Fields.

Please read on for information about the Adelaide University Touch Club, including Club History, the Waite Touch competition and the club committee.

Using the Video Camera

Before handing over the video camera, please ensure that all batteries are charged, all tapes that are with the camera have either had their material transferred over, or are labelled and are wound to a point where no useful material will be taped over. Make sure that the all cables, including the firewire cable for transferring video are contained in the camera bag unless the camera is to be returned to you for transferring and editing material.

When filming games, try to follow these guidelines:

  • Take the lens cap off and point the camera at where you are filming before you start recording
  • Use a tripod if possible to provide greater stability, or pan slowly so people will not feel sick watching what you have recorded
  • Shoot with the viewer screen visible so you keep a better eye on the play rather than looking through the viewfinder
  • Try to keep shots relatively wide while ensuring that you can see the ball (we don't want a 'video for ants!'). Doing this will increase the value of any video taken for coaching purposes. As we only have one camera shooting, the value of a wider shot overrides the value of closeups.
  • Make sure that the exposure is the correct setting for the light conditions.
  • Film at one of the ten metre lines or behind the dead ball line.
  • Turn the mike off if you're going to provide potentially embarassing commentary (or leave it on ;) )

Waite Competition Policies and Procedures

Club Member's Financials

Hi everyone,

Reminder that fees are due THIS FRIDAY, 24th NOVEMBER.

I've attached a list of the money paid/owed by every member of the club. There are no figures listed for sports association fees as i'm unsure as to who is a student. Students of Adelaide University owe $33, while other members owe $66. Once paid this will last for a year except for students who (as it has been outstanding) will need to pay again in o'week next year.

Hope this makes sense. If not, please feel free to email me at treasurer(at)autouch.org.au or tahlia.christie(at)student.adelaide.edu.au

Annual Reports

The Adelaide University Touch Club must produce an annual report each year for the Sports Association.

2004 Annual Report

President Matt Gray has just produced the 2004 Annual Report which will be tabled at the Adelaide University Sports Association AGM.

Winter Season 2003

In the first season of the drive for a greater student percentage of membership, AUTCâ's O-Week was successful with many new faces turning out to play. The new members and the returning old hands allowed us to field 10 teams in the winter of 2003.

With two mens teams and two womens teams on Monday night (the A-Grade womens team actually played in the mens B-grade, above one of the AUTC mens teams), three mixed teams on Thursday night and three mixed teams on Sunday morning, all club members were accommodated with the skill level they wanted to play at and the time they wanted to play. And with Brendon King leading training on Wednesday nights the season became very successful.

On Monday night both mens teams won their divisions (A and C grade). The women were competitive and pressed hard for contention all season, with the A grade side competing strongly, making the Men’s B grade finals.

Thursday night saw the Mixed A/B team dominate all season culminating with an 11-0 win in the grand final. The Mohawks (Mixed E) were the surprise of the season. Showing mixed form through the season, they ended just losing the grand final.

Sunday saw the improvement of the Mixed A team. After losing one of the teams playmakers, Paul “Gonzo Harold, to a freak accident (not on the touch field) in the middle of the year, the team showed much perseverance to make it to the grand final, losing only to the form team all season.

The winter season was very successful and finished with AUTC being crowned Club Champion within the City Touch competition, beating out 4 other clubs. We gave out some awards of our own, with the following awards being awarded by the club coaches:

Jo Mitchell Award (Most Promising Female): Larua Teakle

Gary Williamson Award (Most Promising Male): Cameron Milne

Best Team: Combovers (Mens A-Grade)

Most Enthusiastic Team: Blue Rinse (Mixed F-Grade)

Best Coach: Matt Gray

Best Club Person: Sandii Brimble

Summer season 2003-2004

AUTC once again ran its own Thursday night mixed competition during summer. With an air to making the feeling very relaxed, and with the support of the rugby club, AUTC ran a barbeque every week to encourage people to spend some time after their games watching other people and having fun. The social atmosphere created helped to make this a very successful season.

With 34 teams (the maximum possible due to lighting), the competition was a sell out two weeks before the first game. With 5 divisions and 5 AUTC teams, AUTC was strongly involved. Running from mid November through until the start of March, the competition was well organized and well received.

Although there was no AUTC team in the top division the team that won the competition was made up of 90% AUTC members who had decided to play in a social team for a year. (Most of these members played for AUTC in other competitions through the year.) Although none of the AUTC teams was runner up or won their division, all teams improved over the season and most players have decided to return for winter season (2004).

Barbara Morgan from the AUTC Kites (E-Grade) received the best female player for that grade, and Seth Debolt from the AUTC Condors (D-Grade) received best male player for his grade.

AUTC also entered teams into the Tuesday night competition run by City Touch. AUTC entered two mens teams, one in A-Grade and another in B-Grade, and one womens team, entered in B-Grade. No team made it to the grand final but Darren Jones was awarded the Best and Fairest award for the A-Grade.

Beach Touch

After a year off in 2002, AUTC ran a beach touch competition in 2003. Held at Glenelg on the 7th of December, it had a mens and a womens competition with $100 prize money for the winning teams. There were nine teams in the Mens competition and eight teams in the Womens competition. Due to the social nature of the competition, most of the AUTC members who participated did so in social teams. Both teams who won the competitions were made up of mainly AUTC members.

The day ran well and no problems were encounted and AUTC is hoping to make it a regular part of its calendar once again.

Social Activities

AUTC is a club trying to increase its social output in an effort to keep people interested in more than just the sport of touch. With the losing of one social coordinator (Sandii Brimble) to work at the start of the summer season and with the position only recently being filled, 2003-2004 summer season was a bit hap hazard on the social scene.

However the year started well with the traditional Presidents Keg, followed up by a pub-crawl and a movie night. The End Of Season Dinner was once again a highlight of the year. With awards handed out and the traditional movie causing a stir, the night went well.

Throughout summer the teams were encouraged to stay after matches and have drinks at the barbeque and with sponsorship for Touch SA giving free entry to the Arkaba's "Time Warp", some memorable times were had. The summer season was capped with a lazy Sunday spent playing touch and enjoying another BBQ.

With the new social coordinators putting together this year's itinerary and the starting of a monthly club newsletter, AUTC looks to become even more active.

Representation

AUTC is a large contributor of talent to the sport of touch in SA and as such has many people to recognize for their involvement.

Life Members

Congratulations to Darren Ball, Ninh Duong, Brendan Hennessy and Darren Jones who were awarded Life Membership at the 2003 Winter End of Season Dinner.

With the new season set to start in the near future and training already under way, AUTC is happy to have Paul "Gonzo" Harold back as the beginners coach, and with the number of new recruits out at training it looks to be another exciting season ahead. With the ever-adapting coaching talent and new training drills, AUTC looks to be headed into a very prosperous time.

With ideas about sponsoring members to do both refereeing and coaching courses, and the prospect of gaining government grants to help with training tools, the future is certainly bright for the sport and the club.

AUTC is a club with a great base of members who put in year after year with little or no reward, and it is these people who keep the club running. A large thank you must be said to Darren Jones, who after the nearly total exodus of the committee has gently guided the new committee and given up plenty of his time and effort to see that AUTC did not fall on it's face.

With the new touch season we hope to start becoming a more visible sport on campus.

2005-6 Annual report

Adelaide University Touch Club Annual Report 2005-2006
Winter 2005 Winter season 2005 saw AUTC field 9 teams in the City Touch competition. 2 mens teams, 2 womens teams and 5 mixed teams of differing skill and ability. With teams playing on 3 days and training on another day, some members represented AUTC 4 nights a week. The addition of the second womens team was a great acomplisment for the club. For the first time in along time our female members had a higher standard of touch to see and aspire to. Trainings saw the general standard of touch once again raised through out the whole club. And with many of our members playing in and spectating on the “State League” the drive to improve has rairly been higher. Summer 2005-2006 Summer saw AUTC one again running its Thursday night competition. The season was a success mainly due to the input of the volunteers throughout the whole club. Time keepers, desk sitters, tong masters and referees all put in a massive amount of time to keep the competition running smoothly. This year the addition of a “buzzword” facility for people playing in our competition to check the status of games from their mobile phone added another level of professionalism to our competition, also the purchase of a PA system to be installed for the 06/07 season will see a marked improvement in the ability for the night to be run smoothly. On the sport side, AUTC had 6 teams with one team in all grades at least. All teams did perform well through out the season improving as they went. We also entered 2 mens teams and 2 womens team into the City Touch competition. All teams played well through the season with both female teams perfoming exceptionally well only to fall at the last hurdle in their respective divisions. Autumn Touch This season saw the most teams ever entered by ATUC into this competition. Proving that the desire to play touch is high in the club. With little or no break for some touch has become a year round sport. Autumn is still under way and we have high hope for all our teams. With the introduction of the VSU and the uncertainty of how the club will manage, we have tried to future proof the club as best we can, and fundraising will soon be a priority. However, as we are a touch club, it is my great desire for the AUTC name to be on all the trophies that is enters teams in to compete for, and for AUTC to become a power in South Australian touch as we have both the talent and numbers to do. Matt Gray President

2006-7 Annual Report

Touch Club end of year report

The Adelaide University Touch Club continues to be a well respected and visible part of touch in the South Australian touch community.

The winter 2006 season again saw impressive numbers of teams being entered into the City Touch competitions in both the single sex and mixed competitions, with many members adopting the new design of playing tops available. This year the club began to see the exceptional results after three years of development of the women within the club. The A-grade women won their competition, and the B-grade women competed respectably in the same A-grade competition. Congratulations need to go both to the dedicated group of players, and their coaches Matt Gray and Darren Jones for the improvement that has been seen over the last couple of years. The men in both A-grade and B-grade made their opponents work hard, however, neither team were able to finish the season with any honours.

The mixed teams continued to ride on the strength of the women within the club, with the A-grade being premiers, and four other teams at various levels competing very well in their respective grades.

AUTC has entered two male and two female teams in the city touch competition over the summer 06-07 season, all teams thus far are competing well, with the women again leading their competition.

The competition run by AUTC on the rugby fields at Waite during summer continues to be seen as an exceptional competition with an excellent social atmosphere, and high quality touch. Five AUTC teams are competition in this competition in all grades.

AUTC this year again successfully ran the only beach touch competition in the state which was entered by 13 teams. This year, thanks to a government grant, the club was able to manufacture special lines for the competition.

The touch club was able to qualify a Men’s team and a Mixed team into the Australian Uni Games, held in Adelaide. Due to restrictions with numbers, only a Mixed team was entered, an intense week of social interaction was complimented by some excellent quality touch. The team, which included two members who had never played the sport before, lost a game to Melbourne Uni, which would have guaranteed a top 4 placing at the championships. Jeffrey Dutschke was awarded with Green and Gold team selection.

The committee of the club continues to be strong, with a good numbers being involved in the administration of the club. The hard work of a dynasty of social coordinators sees the club continue to grow at a social level. The club again held its annual pub crawl, quiz night, President’s keg, lawn bowls night and end of season dinner. All have been very well attended.

Life memberships of the touch club were awarded to Christine Lai and Matt Gray at the end of season dinner. Christine has been a member of the touch club for over a decade, with a long history of serving on the committee. She has an excellent playing history, starting in a low grade mixed team, and is currently a permanent member the clubs A-grade Mixed and Women’s teams, and has represented the club at the National Touch League. Matt Gray was awarded his life membership in recognition of his efforts as President of the club for three years. Matt worked tirelessly as a President, player, coach, Referee and competition administrator. With his retirement as President at the 2006 AGM, Matt left the club in an excellent position. Matt has an excellent playing history to a State League level, and he has represented the club with distinction as a referee at a local and interstate level.

In 2006 the club had five of its members represent the state at Opens Level. Darren Jones, Mark Jones and Jeffrey Dutschke played in the Men’s open team that was coached by Darren Ball, and Inke Jones and Sharon Lowe played in the Women’s open team. The senior state teams had many AUTC members, Latchman Singh, Matt Gray, Mark Jones, Darren Jones, Jason Morton and Brendan Hennessy played in the over 30’s mens state team coached by Jeffrey Dutschke and Marty Green represented the state in the over 35’s mens state team. Two club members, Darren Jones and Jeremy Smith played for the Crusaders Men’s team at the National Touch League in 2006. Darren Jones was awarded the special honour of being selected to play for Australia in the Senior Mixed team at the World Cup in South Africa in January 2007.

The club continues to be a key development ground for touch in South Australia. Six members of the club were awarded their level one coaching certificates in 2006, and the club continues to develop referees at its Waite competition.

The coming year in 2007 sees touch in South Australia in a position where it needs to begin to attract teenagers and young adults into the sport. AUTC is no different, and now has a real need to attract, and retain new members to the club, particularly males. The club has allocated a substantial budget to this need, and hopes to see immediate and longer term results.

The Club is currently in a strong position, administratively, financially and on the field. With its current dedicated committee and numerous assistants, the club has set about growing further, attracting new members and leading the state in the development of touch.

Waite Mixed Touch Summer '07-08

Adelaide University Touch Club will once again be running a Mixed Touch Competition on Thursday nights at the Waite playing fields (corner of Fullarton Rd and Claremont Avenue, Netherby) in summer ‘07/08.

For new teams to the competition we will be holding a beginners' week on Thursday October 27th at 6:10 pm. If you are a returning team you do not need to show up for this week, but any team wanting a litle bit of extra coaching or just the chance to brush out some cobwebs this may be the ideal opportunity. Otherwise the normal rounds will commence as follows:

Round 1 - 7: November 1 - December 13
Christmas/New Year Break
Round 8 - 14: January 10 - February 21
Finals: February 28 - March 6.

Finals wil be played over two weeks, with the Grand Finals on the 6th of March. It is our expectation that each of the four divsions will contain eight teams, with the divisions split into a top four and bottom four for the finals, with the first week comprising of 1 v 4 and 2 v 3 games. The winners of these games shall play in the Grand Finals in the following week.

Referees
Teams are reminded that wearing white shirts is not recommended, because of the colour clash with referees. We also ask that teams wear shirts with numbers on the back, as this allows referees to communicate with players more readily, in turn allowing the game to flow more smoothly. If a referee cannot attract the attention of a player because they are not wearing a number and the player misses a direction made to him/her, then it will be to the player’s disadvantage and it is not the responsibility of the referee to make sure the message has been received.

We will endeavour to have two referees for as many games as possible. It is therefore of great assistance to us if anyone from your team is interested in refereeing, and we request that they contact us as soon as possible. Courses are available for anyone new to refereeing and could be arranged as needed. And of course, refereeing is also a great way to earn a little bit of extra cash with referees paid for each game they officiate.
AUTC wishes to maintain a fair and friendly environment and will not tolerate any abuse directed at referees, and reserves the right to send off from the field any player whose behaviour is deemed unacceptable, which may result in further game suspension. Teams are also reminded that by showing respect to the referees, they encourage those who undertake this essential role to continue, ensuring that we always have enough referees and do not need to assign refereeing duties to each team during the season.

Hot Weather Guidelines
Adelaide has hot summers. We recognise the need to protect participants from the dangers that can be caused by participating in extreme weather conditions, but we are also aware that people like to play as many games as possible. We therefore have in place a hot weather policy to balance these requirements.

If the 5pm temperature at Adelaide (as given for Kent Town on the Bureau of Meteorology website) is:

· 34 or below, games will proceed as normal from 6:10 pm.
· above 34 but below 38, then games will take place at the normal time, but will be modified to the form of four quarters of ten minutes, with a 3-minute break between quarters one and two and three and four, and a 5-minute break at half time.
· 38 or above, then games will be delayed until 6:40 pm and will be modified to three periods of ten minutes each, with 3-minute breaks between each ten minute period.

In the event of extreme wet weather or storms games may also be called off. This decision will be made as soon as possible and be communicated on our website.

Male/Female Player Eligibility
Waite is a mixed competition and as such requires no more than three males on the field at any one time. We appreciate that sometimes teams may have difficulties finding the required number of female players to field a side, and have always respected the abilities of different age groups of players. As such, boys under 13 and men over 50 can be counted as females on the field. If you have any team members who fit into this category and wish to be eligible as a female player, please include this in your nomination form.

Finals Eligibility
To be eligible to play for finals each player must have played at least 3 games in the minor round. Sign-on sheets will be provided before the commencement of each game at the front desk, and players are advised to sign these sheets before each game they play.

Additionally, any team that has not made full payment of their fees before the finals begin will be ineligible to play. Refer to Entry Conditions below.

Playing Rules and Regulations
AUTC adheres to the playing rules and regulations as outlined by the Australian Touch Association.

Entry
Entry Forms available here.

Teams will need to supply a deposit of $250 with their team entry, and will not be officially entered in the competition until this deposit has been received. The deposit and entry form are due by October 12th. If you have a problem with this time frame, please contact us and we may be able to negotiate a compromise. We often have greater interest from teams than spots available in the competition and have had to turn teams away in the past, so as the competition fills any team that has not made the deposit may lose their spot to a paying team.

Entries should be posted or emailed to the addresses shown on the Entry Form. Cheques should also be sent to the postal address shown. Alternatively, payments can be made directly into our bank account, either via a branch or the internet. This hopefully will make it easier to make payments, and in a timely fashion.

Direct deposits can be made to:

Bank SA
Account Name: Adelaide University Touch Club
BSB: 105-120
Account No: 020658640

Please include your team’s name in the payment details. Direct payments should also be accompanied by an email, outlining amount and date paid and name of team.

The first 32 teams to pay the deposit and send in an entry form will be considered the final teams. Confirmation of entry will be made by preferred mode of communication, with a list of entries being provided on our website. We will contact any teams that are unsuccessful in obtaining a place in the competition by phone.

Total team fees are:

Normal (to be paid by the first round after the Christmas break – 10 Jan 2008): $850

Late (any time after this, but due by Round 12 - 7 Feb 2008): $950

If you have any queries please don’t hesitate to contact Belinda at Belinda@autouch.org.au, otherwise we look forward to receiving your nomination and to a rewarding season of touch football.

Well, that about wraps it up for the season, all of us at AUTC hope you enjoyed the season and we look forward to seeing you and your team out at Waite again next summer!

Waite Mixed Touch 2004-5 Wrap

The Grand Finals of the Waite Touch competition produced several close games and a couple of upsets. We have been fortunate this season, losing no games to rain and with the Summer being quite mild, the revamped hot weather policy did not need to come into effect.

Blue Jays played MFF in the H grade final. Although Blue Jays had finished higher than MFF in the regular season, MFF had defeated Blue Jays on both occasions that these teams met. Unfortunately for the Blue Jays, MFF made it a clean sweep for season 2004-5, with a 6-4 victory.

In G grade, the Short Blacks were looking to release their big steps on the Black Antz.' In this first versus second clash, the game looked to be over for the Black Antz, as the Short Blacks sliced through the defence. However, the Black Antz put up a spirited performance and made a late comeback, with the final siren being the Short Blacks best friend. In the end, the Short Blacks had too much firepower for the Black Antz, running out winners 7-5.

G/H MVPs: Jason Cuthro (Short Blacks), Tanya Day (Team Yoda)

The Wild Turkeys had clawed their way up to the Grand Final from last position and with their comfortable defeat of AUTC Debt Collectors the week before, looked as if they could defeat AUTC Achilles. Unfortunately for the Turkeys, they could not quite bridge the gap between themselves and Achilles, who went one better than their namesake and won this contest of two opponents, 4-2.

The E grade final saw a rare lopsided score line. The Penguins and Mixtures had shown throughout the season that they were the teams to beat in this division. In their previous encounter, the Mixtures had defeated the Penguins 6-5, so this promised to be a close game. Unfortunately for the Mixtures and their supporters, this expectation was not to prove correct, as the Penguins produced their best result of the season to take victory 9-3.

E/F MVP: Grey Olding (Pigs of Death) Belinda Rawnsley (AUTC Achilles)

Stoneys would have been comfortable favourites for their D grade final against AUTC Jumbo Sponge, after finishing 8 points ahead of their opponents at the end of the regular season. However, those who had seen the last encounter between these teams would have known the game could always produce a result that could go either way. This previous encounter proved an accurate form guide, as AUTC Jumbo Sponge found the scoring power to overcome a determined Stoneys side 7-5.

The C grade final promised not only a close result but an entertaining game. Coming away from their high-scoring victory over Debacle, the Soaks knew they had the scoring potential to upset the all-conquering Coopers. Previous encounters between these teams (a draw and a narrow victory to Coopers) suggested Coopers could not rest easy though and they didn''t, taking the game to the Soaks and showing some attacking skills of their own in their 8-5 victory.

C/D MVP: Gerard Treloar (Revheads) Lesley Jones (Fiasco)

Botanics had narrowly missed out on making the A grade finals and were out to prove a point to seasoned Waite veterans the Dodgers. This was a flowing game, with both teams rucking the ball well to gain good field position when they completed their sixes. While Dodgers showed moments of brilliance (including one excellent diving touchdown), Botanics had too much strength across their team, taking the game by three touchdowns (7-4).

In the lead up to their game against top-of-the-table Slack Dogs the AUTC Disco Bandits had indicated that if they put in a solid game, the result could be close. With Slack Dogs missing several good players, the Disco Bandits put themselves right in the game at half-time. Slack Dogs, who had been slightly on top in the first half, paid the price of weary legs as the faster AUTC players made a half-run and two individual breaks to put themselves ahead. Despite the efforts of the experienced female players of Slack Dogs, the female players of the Disco Bandits held firm and did not let a try in as the game drew to a close, leaving Disco Bandits ahead by one at the final siren (4-3).

A/B MVP: Darren Jones (AUTC Disco Bandits) Corinne McNamara (Botanics)

What do I get for my Money?

What do I get for my money? Organization - The coaches and committee are volunteers, who put a lot of time into running the club, doing things like selecting and organising teams, organising training and trial matches, answering e-mails, paying bills and trying to give everyone the best experience with AUTC possible. A volunteer committee runs the income-earning Waite Summer competition. Their hard work saves all club members money. Coaching - As you have seen at training, we have quite a few enthusiastic coaches who have put their hands up to help coach other club members. These volunteer coaches put many hours into training and planning and try to do their best to improve the playing ability of all players. Other club members - If you played in your own social team, you would not meet so many new people. Many people form rewarding and lasting relationships, friendships and contacts through playing Touch with AUTC. Social events - The committee aims to have a busy social calendar. Where possible, we try to put your membership fees back into subsidising team fees or social events. Player pathways - We have teams for all level of abilities. As your Touch ability improves, you will be able to play in a team that fits your ability. This is hard to do outside of a club. As a player with AUTC, you are eligible to play for the Eastern Stingrays team, which competes in the Touch SA State League. Our higher-level teams offer a good stepping-stone towards playing in the State League and potentially the State team and from there, the National Touch League and maybe even Australia. Technical Support - If you are an aspiring Coach, Referee or Selector, the club will support you to undertake courses. More experienced members of the club will provide you with mentoring and support in these areas. AUTC has always prided itself on developing and supporting people in the technical areas of Touch.
